From 2012 to 2015, I had the pleasure of visiting and working in Valencia on a number of occasions; with colleagues from the Universitat Politècnica de Valencia. During my visits, I have continually found the city and locale to be one of the most intriguing and rich places that I have spent time. The history of the place, the architecture and the urban pattern all serve to create a place which is like no other.
In the summer of 2014, I was invited to act as ‘visiting professor’ for an international workshop involving staff and students from architecture schools in Valencia, Vienna, Graz, Ljublyana, Kiev, and Split. The subject of the workshop was La Huerta, a unique form of urban agriculture surrounding Valencia. During the week of my participation in the workshop, I became enamoured of la huerta and the history of it.
When asked by the Academy of Urbanism to write a short piece about a place that I enjoyed, there was little doubt in my mind that Valencia would be the subject.
